The Early Bird - Part I

What happened to the early bird after she got the worm?

Up too early?

This is what happened to Emma a few weeks ago.  She woke up around 2:30 am and began talking, playing and trying to get into everything around the house.  As the rest of the house was preparing for Sunday service, her little exhausted body crashed on the air mattress.  Initially, she seemed like she was trying to play a game, but she never got back up until we left for church.

The early word gets the worm, and then she has to take a nap!

Welcome to Friday - 10.24.14

Welcome to Friday
The heavens declare the glory of God & the firmament shows his handiwork - Psalm 19:1

Welcome to Friday!  Welcome to a new day created, blessed, and made ready for you by the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  Driving in I watched the sun and clouds posing for their morning pictures against the beautiful backdrop of the city skies.  The view was amazing and another reminder that God is amazing, and his wonders are breathtaking.  Have you ever seen a skyline so amazing that you stand in awe?

So, how are you doing today?  How are things going for you and your family?  What kind of week are you having, and did you have so far?  I hope your week was great, and I hope that you were able to achieve your goals for the week.  I am praying that you are feeling well and that you are doing well.  I am so thankful for you and your love for me and my family.  I am grateful for all that you do and have done for us and for your continued kind thoughts and prayers.

This has been a very good week.  I missed emailing last week because I was enjoying the fellowship of new and old friends during a spiritual renewal and empowerment "Walk to Emmaus."  I spent Thursday night through Sunday night getting focused in on God's grace, love, and tender mercies for His children, especially me.  It was amazing to hear 15 speakers give a short course on grace, priorities, love, faith, forgiveness, brokenness, healing and surrender.  I sat with an amazing table of men, fellow pilgrims on a journey, who helped make the weekend amazing.  Over the 72+ hours, we heard some powerful testimonies and life experiences with grace and surrender.  There was great food and delicious desserts on top of it all.

It was tough not being with the girls and with Trish.  It was tough missing them and wondering what they were up to and how they were making it through their day.  With the exception of the Thursday night, which featured a night of silence and silent meditation, I loved the weekend experience.  Being quiet was very tough for me.  As Momma used to say, I don't do well with "talk breaks."  But, somehow, grace of God, I made it through being quiet for 9 - 10 hours, I made it through the silence, made it through missing Trish and the girls, and not having cellphones, watches or computers and enjoyed a grace filled weekend.  My biggest weekend takeaway was the forgiveness, grace and love of God to heal the brokenness that I didn't even realize existed in my own heart and soul.  Brokenness and healing.  Forgiveness!  It was an amazing weekend.

When I got home the girls gave me the warmest reception ever.  It was overwhelming and amazing.  They jumped, laughed, and poured out a weekend's worth of fun, jokes, episodes, and events in rapid fire.  They hugged me and asked how did things go.  They were so excited and remained excited for hours.  Gabbi went through my bags to look for candy, gifts, and any surprises.  Emma kept smiling and trying to tell me something, but I couldn't understand it.  Cassarra and Sydney surprised me by writing short letters of love and appreciation to me while I was away.  The letters were a blessing and reinforced by their love when I got home.  It was a blessing!  Ava was so precious.  I guess at three she has trouble understanding the traveling part.  Before leaving, I spent time with her to let her know I was going to be gone, and I would be back on Sunday.  I hugged her, told her I loved her and asked her to take care of her mom and sisters.  The whole time she nodded and tried not to cry.  That was Thursday.  On Sunday she sat in my arms and she said, "Thank you for coming back."  Amazing!  I know that parenting has it challenges, but this is one of the rewards.

Speaking of challenges, Trish and the older girls were a part of cleaning up a challenge on Tuesday night.  Let's just say that we had a potty training setback and leave it at that.  But, truthfully, even this challenge was tinged with blessings.  For one, the older girls jumped in and helped clean up, without even being asked.  They helped with humor and actual cleaning.  I was so proud.  And, secondly, I was even more amazed by Gabbi, who was waiting for me to take her out, but she willingly gave up her trip to help out.  Now she did remind me in the morning, but for that night she was completely selfless.

The rest of the week was eventful, but not quite as messy.  Trish and I had some really good time together to re-coupe, laugh and run errands .  Monday went by in a blur.  We spent time Wednesday laughing and talking, folding clothes and watching a movie.  I spent Thursday at a conference in Charlotte.  It was highlighted by some really helpful speakers on our work process.  I learned a good bit and enjoyed meeting a couple of new people and catching up with a few colleagues.  I even got a chance to visit with an amazing and gracious friend in Rock Hill on my way back home.  I wasn't able to touch base with Alex or Justin, but hopefully next time it will work to see them when I'm back in the Queen City.  We celebrated the week with pizza, breadsticks and cookies at dinner.  Pizza seems to bring out the conversations and laughter.  It is so amazing to hear what goes on, and how these "little personalities" are growing.

All in all, the girls are doing well.  They have a busy weekend planned.  There are birthday parties and fall festivals on the calendar.  Gabbi and Cassarra are volunteering and working for their respective clubs.  Trish and I are planning to carve out several hours to rest, recharge and just catch up.

I hope you had an amazing week and that you too will have a fabulous weekend.  May God richly bless you with the incalculable richness of His grace, the surpassing beauty of His love, and the overwhelming compassion with which He loves you.  Have fun and enjoy your friends, family and loved ones.  Take care and...

Welcome to Friday!

May the Everlasting arms of the gracious God,
reach out and hold you close, love on you,
and bring you hope, joy and peace.

Welcome to Friday! - 10.17.14

Welcome to Friday
The heavens declare the glory of God & the firmament shows his handiwork - Psalm 19:1

Welcome to Friday!  Welcome to a new day created, blessed, and made ready for you by the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  How are you doing today?  How are things going for you and your family?  What kind of week are you having, and did you have so far?  I hope your week was great, and I hope that you were able to achieve your goals for the week.  I am praying that you are feeling well and that you are doing well.

I am so thankful for you and your love for me and my family.  I am grateful for all that you do and have done for us and for your continued kind thoughts and prayers.  Every prayer has been a blessing that continues to help us all grow and mature in Christ.

This has been a very good week.  We have had some interesting moments, some really good moments, some really great moments, and some moments of relief a long time in the making.  For example, a relief moment came this week on Thursday when my team completed a software release.  On Thursday we completed the first major software release in the last six months, and it is one of the largest in past two years.  The team did an outstanding job of overcoming some technical issues, frustrations, and self inflicted wounds to accomplish the release two weeks ahead of schedule.  I'm so glad this release is finally done.  Now I am praying that we covered every test case, dotted every i"", and crossed every "t" so that the new sales will reflect positively on our hard work.

An example of a good moment was starting a new book study at home on grace.  Trish started the whole crew on a new book study using a book by Max Lucado.  We finished a previous book study, on changing our words, some time ago.  It was a good thing to start another study, and hopefully it will be one to keep the growth of our family moving positively forward.

A set of challenging moments took place during this week as well.  At lunch on Friday and Monday my team was soundly and embarrassingly beaten at basketball.  Monday was the fifth loss in a row.  The only bright side of Monday's beat down was not losing my temper like I did on Friday.  At work on Tuesday I had to help a couple of co-workers handle some tough criticism.  In the end it was cathartic for the team to hear some unspoken expectations and frustrations vetted in the open.

A lot of special moments and blessings took place in this week.  Some of the great things that happened include:
  • Date night at the SC State Fair
    • Eating an elephant ear and turkey leg
    • Enjoying the sights and sounds of the fair with Trish
    • Exploring the exhibits, especially the paintings and sand sculpture without little people complaining that it was boring
  • Getting to chat (and hear stories) with my brother Vincent on the job site in Columbia
  • Cleaning up at church
  • Cleaning up at home, especially getting a good start on clearing my accumulation of clutter in the office
  • Sunday rest and naps and another date with Trish
  • Laughing with Paige, Sydney and Emma at Walmart.
    • Paige couldn't push Emma in the stroller without nearly running into something or someone
  • Dinner together as a family on Wednesday night
  • Completing the current software release at work
  • Progress in resolving an issue with the high school
  • Bible study with my friend Yuhui; we finally got our schedules synced after nearly a month

We had a lot going on at home, at work and at church this week.  I spent a lot of time on Saturday getting to know one some of the older youth while picking vines out of the fencing, and cleaning the church yard.  The work was time consuming and a bit tedious.  However, getting to hear the stories from some of the kids, even my own, was worth the four hours and then some.  Especially hearing how other kids try to manipulate, and successfully manipulate, their parents was eye opening and comforting to a degree.  Scary, but somehow a comfort to know that every parent has similar battles.  Sunday service was very nice, and even the critique of "Dad, you were too long," was received well.  Or better than normal.

The weekend included more joys as we all laughed before church as the 2:30 am duo (Ava and Emma) finally crashed before and after church.  For some unknown reason they woke up at 2:30 am and decided to stay up, and then try to wake up the whole house.  Finally, as we were getting ready for church they began to crash.  One by one they went down.  We also enjoyed listening, as always, to the funny stories that my brother Vincent shares from his perspective in masonry, entrepreneurship, and construction.  It was also fun to hear the girls shout out with excitement, "Hey, there is Uncle Vincent," as we passed by the building where he was working on Gervais Street.  We all looked up at the familiar thermal wearing man on the scaffolds and smiled.

The girls were out of school on Monday and enjoyed a trip to the movies with Trish.  They all seemed to really enjoy the movie, the popcorn, and of course having a day out of school.  Later that same night I got a chuckle as Emma slid up in the couch beside me and started watching Monday Night Football.  She pointed at the screen and looked at me as if she were trying to understand the game.  It was only a bit later that I realized she was trying to hide from bedtime like her sister Ava.  Ava on the other hand ran out of the room to hide from Trish.  I guess Emma figured Trish wouldn't make her leave if she was sitting by my side.

All in all the week for everyone was pretty good.  It wasn't too busy and the girls seemed to really thrive with the extra day off.  I hope you have a great weekend.  I hope that you enjoy every moment of today and have a splendid weekend filled with memorable moments, love, and laughter.  Take care and....

Welcome to Friday

May God bless you to experience a fullness and depth of love.
May God give you strength, greater hope, and an unshakable love.
May the hope of early Sunday, the promises of eternal life,
and the peace of Christ richly bless you today and always

With love (& in triumph),

Trust in the Lord, and through the mercy of the most High you shall not be moved ~Ps. 21:7

Good morning!  Today is a beautiful day!  It has been created and blessed for you and it will be the kick-starter for a great weekend.  How are you doing?  How are things going with you?  I just wanted to check in again to say Welcome to another Friday, and another weekend.  I hope that you have had blessed and productive week.  What were your highlights?  What neat things were you able to accomplish this week, and what things were apart of your amazing story of grace and love received.  I hope and pray that you have had a great week, and I hope that you are off to a great start to your day.
I woke up and had the blessing of seeing the moon and the morning clouds beautifully arrayed in simply stunning form and fashion.  The moon was out very bright and the contrast in the clouds and shadows was brilliant and breathtaking.  We all know how breathtaking the sunset can be, this morning was on the same level.  The pictures I took captured only a fraction of the amazing views and images on God's tapestry.
In the morning devotional I found these joyful truths for today and this week: "God doesn't promise to take you out of your situation; He promises to bring you through it... If you look for reasons to rejoice, you will find them!"  I don't have to look that long or that hard to find a great number of blessings this week:
  • A beautiful family that knows how to laugh, live, pray, and forgive
  • A fantastic visit over the weekend with my mother-in-law
  • Enjoyable and productive worship and workshop service at the Black Church Summit
    • Putting together a good slide deck to present to pastors, missionaries, and elders of many churches
    • Delivering a great talk on Manna Station a ministry that feeds the homeless and hungry
  • Laughing at the girls as they came home soaking wet from the football game
  • Cassarra going to homecoming and arriving home safely.  She looked so beautiful in her homecoming dress.
  • Finishing up our software release project at work
  • Receiving acknowledgement for my quick thinking and problem escalation and resolution at work
  • Spending time with Trish on date night
  • Attending parent teacher conferences at school
    • The school is improving by leaps and bounds
    • Learning that the girls are excelling and thriving in the new curriculum
  • Late nights with Ava and Emma
    • Watching Monday night football with Ava who "couldn't sleep."
    • Catching a late night snack with Ava who was "so hungry."
    • Watching Emma push a chair from the table over to the counter to search for my M&M's
    • Thursday night dinner and going out for soft serve ice cream

This has been a good week and the list of things to rejoice in could go on for miles.  We had a great meeting at work and learned that our company rallied from a deficit in August to achieve a great September.  In our monthly company meeting my group was singled out for helping secure over $325,000 in deals last month, and helping earn a renewal for another $300,000.  It was great to hear some really outstanding engineers get credit for their hard work.  Our church was invited to speak about a ministry a good friend started to feed the homeless and the hungry, and I think it went well.  I won big at basketball on Monday, which has helped to offset the pain of losing on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The week's blessings also included meeting some new folks, enjoying time at home just watching movies, talking, laughing about school, and watching the girls interact.  It was a blessing to listen to Sydney describe her week at school and how much she is learning.  She wrote a not to her teacher saying how excited she was to learn and go to school.  Sydney is in training for "Girls on the Run" and will run a 5K sometime this fall.  She is also rehearsing on the honor choir and been selected as a mentor for her P.E class.

It was a joy to see Paige's school reports and realize how talented she is with computers, writing and math.  Paige is a little mystery.  Sometimes you wonder if she is paying attention and then boom - she blows you away with what she has heard, understood and applied.  I was also amazed by Paige this week and her protection and watchful eye over Ava.  Normally the two of them harass and wrestle each other like crazy and make you want to pull out your hair.

Trish and I were both glad that Cassarra and Gabbi enjoyed the football game and returned home with only soaking wet hair, soggy shoes, and in need of a shower and warm blanket.  The rain gave us a teaching moment for preparation (what to wear, what to carry).  It was also a good chance to tell them about knowing when to come home.  They both enjoyed the game and the fact that Dutch Fork won the game.  Gabbi seems to enjoy the social experience of hanging out with her friends, especially since some of them no longer attend the same high school.  It was also funny to hear Cassarra talk about how much it costs to be a fan of football now that she doesn't get in free to the games as a part of the marching band.

On Saturday, we all harassed and took a ton of pictures of Cassarra in her homecoming dress.  She looked so grown up and all I could think of was - no, not yet!  She is very beautiful and she looked wonderful for the dance.  She enjoyed herself and told Trish all about it into the early hours of the morning.  One of the other fathers, "The cool dad", drove them to the dance and picked them up later.  I listened to the stories of homecoming later, and got the version she shares with Gabbi.

All and all we had a good week.  We are blessed and loved and so grateful for you.  I hope that you have a great weekend.  Take care and enjoy time with your friends, family and loved ones.  I hope you get a chance to worship together and reflect on the tender compassion and love that has been showered on you, even in the midst of your circumstances.

Have a great weekend... and...

Welcome to Friday!

God of sure, true, and amazing tender mercies -
be with us and love on us.
God of sure, true and endless strength -
be with us and provide us with refuge.
God of sure, true and unshakable peace -
be with us and grant our hearts rest.

God of all grace and mercy,God of tremendous power,
God of unconditional love - bless us always and forever.  Amen.

Scars

And what did it cost God to become our Father? His only-begotten Son. The infinite delight of his infinite heart. Betrayed, beaten, scourged, mocked, spit on, nailed, stripped, and forsaken. How much our Father loves us!

As I got dressed for work this morning the scars on my arms and near my waist caught my attention once again.  As I thought about it for a moment I realized that these scars are both horrible and beautiful.

These scars are horrible disfigurements of my arms and my waist.  They include stretch marks, and marks within those marks, bruises and visible patches of discolored skin.  They are horrible reminders of the kidney condition that I was diagnosed with and the difficult treatment that followed.  As I looked at these scars I was reminded of the painful biopsy, the 30 - 40 lbs of weight gain, the fatigue, the intense sweating during even the coldest days of winter. I was reminded of the ridicule and hurtful comments made by friends and strangers at the way my face had swollen up like a giant pumpkin.

These scars are also beautiful reminders on my body.  The scars are reminders of the 10 - 11 years of remission that I have sense enjoyed.  They are beautiful reminders of my mother's love, and the beautiful day that my mother prayed for me.  They are reminders of the wonderful doctor that agreed to treat me like a human being rather than a case number, the amazing and wonderful nurses I met, and especially the Christian nurse who encouraged me with scripture and prayer along the way.  These scars remind me of my families love and care, and of my best friend and wife who has been with me from day one.  Sometimes I imagine that these scars are the marks of God, where God reached down through time and used this tragic diagnosis to pull me closer to himself.

My scars are also beautiful b/c they caused me to think about the horrible and beautiful scars of Christ.  Christ's scars are horrible reminders of the cost of sin, and how our sin nailed him to the cross.  His hands remind me of the painful price he had to pay to be the spotless Lamb of God.  His side reminds me of how he died and how dark and alone he must have felt as he hung and died.  They are horrible reminders of how hate, envy, jealousy and lawlessness led to Calvary.

Christ's scars are also beautiful.  They are beautiful because his hands and side remind me of how much God loved us.  They remind me of how God is both just and justifier.  They are beautiful reminders that God indeed loved the world so much that he gave, and gave, and gave us his only Son.  In his scars I find the beautiful reminder that by his wounds we are healed, and that truth that God has already proved his love for us.  The hands and side that he showed to Thomas are also beautiful reminders of the victory over the grave, the promises of resurrection and life.  Christ's scars are beautiful because with them he purchased each of us back from the dead.

My scars will always be a duality of horror and beauty.  The horror of disease and the beauty of healing, wholeness, love and prayer.  The scars of the cross are also the duality of horror and beauty.  The horror of sin, shame, darkness and hell on the one hand.  The beauty of love, grace, salvation, peace, fellowship and victory on the other.

With love (& in triumph),
Cassius

Purchase price paid... title deed held

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV)

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (The Voice)

Don't you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who comes from God and dwells inside of you? You do not own yourself. You have been purchased at a great price, so use your body to bring glory to God!

Ava, my fifth daughter, is at the age where young kids have a tendency to question everything.  And one of her favorite questions, no matter what the request is "Why?"

When you ask her to pick up the toys, she responds, "Why?"  If you tell her to sit down while eating, she retorts, "Why?"  If you ask her to pass you the remote, go call her sister for dinner, bring you a diaper for her sister Emma, spit out that nasty rubber band she is chewing on, it is almost automatic that she will ask you, "Why?"  Ava, look at the stars, I say.  She answers, "Why are the stars up there?"  When walking outside she wants to know why are there mosquitoes (I don't know why), why are there dragon flies, birds, and frogs.  And even if she hears a sound she will ask "Why?  Why did that bird make that sound?"

For Ava why is a gateway to knowledge, reason, understanding and purpose.  Why should she clean her room leads her to understanding the purpose and goal of cleaning.  Not cleaning her room also helps her understand the concept of disobedience and consequences.

As I read the verses from Paul, I thought about Ava and her new favorite question, "Why?"  As I thought about why I began to imagine that maybe Paul had his own "learning and inquiring mind" who was sure to ask him "why".  I imagine that in these verses Paul decides to answer the why question for those who would read and or be read his letter.

He clearly sets out to answer why someone should honor their bodies, worship God through sanctity and purity, and protect their character and virtue.  "Why?" his audience asks, and he replies, that we are His.  God has redeemed us from our life of sin for His glory.  We do it because we have been bought with a great price.  The price paid is well above rubies, diamonds, and all the gold one can find.  The price that was paid was so great a price that it cost His only Son His life.  Why?  Glorify God in your bodies and live as a temple of the Holy Spirit because you have been bought with the precious blood of Christ.  And what does God intend for this purchase?  He intends to make it whole, holy, righteous and His dwelling place.

Welcome to Friday - 10.03.14

As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me. Psalm 55:16

Welcome to Friday!  I just wanted to check in again to say Welcome to another Friday, and another weekend.  My sincere hope is that you have had a really amazing week and that you have been very successful in the things that you have set out to accomplish.  How are you doing?  How do you feel today and what has been going on in your areas of concern and influence.  How did you spend your week, and what was the best part of the week?  Was your week a blur of activity or did you have a nice week of reflection and contemplation?  I hope that you are doing well, and again I hope that you had a great week.

This morning was the start to a great Friday.  The four older girls and I went to breakfast at the Chick-fil-A that is just around the corner from our house.  It was our first Friday breakfast date.  Ava and Emma didn't make this trip because they were still sleeping, and because I overslept and didn't have enough time to get them ready.  We had a great start to the day with breakfast, a short devotional, and a bunch of laughs.  We joked about the things gone by this week, funny stories from school and home, and mis-communication that turned into  immense laughter.   We also did a bit of catching up and reflecting on the week.  It makes the day brighter when you get off to such a good start.
While much of this week has been a blur, I am so thankful for a number of blessings:
  • Enjoying the church homecoming cookout, until the yellow jackets took over
    • Enjoying a paddle boat ride with Ava on the lake
    • Spending time with friends and family
    • Good barbecue chicken and
  • Spending time cooking out for friends and neighbors on Sunday
    • Laughed about old college times with a friend from college.  It was very interesting to hear how others saw you in college.
    • Plus, great hotdogs hot off the grill
  • Learning that Emma is serious about ice cream
    • Emma ate my ice cream pop while I was looking away and talking to Trish
  • Enjoying breakfast Friday morning with the girls
  • Ava's last dental check up for the tooth she hurt and slightly cracked months ago
  • The dentist adjusting some of the charges that the insurance company will no longer cover
  • Health Insurance!
  • Trish's taco soup was simply fantastic
  • Seeing Sydney's pictures as a literacy coach at DFES
  • Hearing that Gabbi once tutored a young boy who is now a part of the Advanced Gifted and Talented Program
  • Hearing great updates from friends battling and surviving breast cancer
  • Having an amazing Homecoming speaker at church and great worship service
  • A great start to our next project at work
  • A successful initial planning meeting for my team at work

Overall, this has been a really good week.  We have had our set of unique challenges, and we have watched with joy and amazement as God has opened doors and opened our eyes to His presence and blessing.

The girls are all doing well.  Ava had no ill affects from getting stung by a yellow jacket on Sunday, except for becoming even more terrified of flying bugs for a couple of days.  Even a common fly sent her into a fit of terror on Sunday. Emma has a little cold and a low grade fever, but you can barely tell with all the tussling and activity that she has.  Even last night as I tried to work off some of the extra, extra servings of Trish's amazing taco soup, Emma's extra energy was on display.  She took books off the book shelf, rolled a chair over to the high book shelf and took down a photo album, and talked up a storm.  I really want to tape her conversations so I can ask her later, "What were you talking about?"  Ava was Emma's co-conspirator in these adventures as usual.  Ava's apparent role was to open the office door, which Emma can't, and then provide a distraction.

Cassarra and Gabbi have been doing well, and on their best behavior so they can go to the rivalry game between Irmo High School and Dutch Fork High School.  Dutch Fork should win easily, but a strange thing happened last year when they were also heavy favorites.  Cassarra is also going to her school's homecoming dance this weekend.  Gabbi is going to tag along at the game and probably try to get out to the movies or a friends.  Last weekend Gabbi was at the movies to celebrate her best friend's birthday.

Sydney and Paige are doing well in school and enjoying their year as scientist and explorers.  Sydney's class is growing and studying a garden.  Paige's class took a field trip and they are studying the facts from that adventure, as well as other facts in the state.  Today the two of them will be walking laps to raise money for the Elementary School.  They have a goal of $25,000 as a school.  Each student set a goal of $10, with the exception of Paige who set her goal at $15.  I'm not sure who they plan to ask, or who they have asked for contributions.

Trish is doing well.  She had physical therapy for her shoulder today, so hopefully her shoulder will continue to mend.  This week was a little less pressure packed, so she got a bit more rest.  Yesterday, her mom came up to visit and help out and this has been a blessing to all of us.  She is working on a number of picture projects and had sometime to display a few of her works in progress.  Many of her photos are so amazing they could be sold in a studio or gallery.  I admire her skill, patience, talent and discerning eye.

Well, I hope that you have a great rest of the day and an fantastic weekend.  I pray that you have a great time enjoying yourself and your loved ones this weekend.

Welcome to Friday

Dear God, we live in a dangerous world,
filled with unpredictable challenges,
unseen perils and tremendous hurt.
Yet, we magnify Your name,
and we dwell confidently in Your power.

Remind us today that You are our strength,
comfort, King, and everlasting refuge.

Grant us unending joy, and unrelenting grace on this journey.
Deepen our knowledge, obedience and love for You.

Merciful and everlasting God, speak peace to our anxious hearts,
speak favor and hope over our days,
and speak life into our every situation and circumstance.

May we stand strong with the psalmist who wrote,
"Let all those rejoice who put their trust in You;
let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them;
let those also who love Your name be joyful in You (Psalm 5:11),"
and with the one who said,
"O magnify the LORD with me,
let us exalt His name together (Psalm 34:3)."

Encourage yourself

David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.  1 Samuel 30:6

A little boy was asked to recite the 23rd Psalm.  His mother helped him read each verse, reciting it several times each day with him.  With each passing milestone the little boy grew more and more confident and gained courage that when his name was called he would be able to deliver all six verses.

The little boy grew confident, gained courage and in short was encouraged that he could.  The dictionary defines encourage as to inspire with hope, give courage, confidence or hearten.  It goes on further in Webster to say that to encourage is:
  • to cheer and lift one's spirits
  • to give support and advice to
  • to make (someone) more determined, hopeful
  • to instill life and energy.

From the scripture David said that he encouraged himself in the Lord.  David put hope in, made himself confident in, and became energized and supported by God.  What did God have, or what is it that God could do to cause David to be inspired by Him, hope in Him, or be heartened by Him?

First David looked at God's attributes.  The little boy needed encouragement and he took it from someone who had the attributes of love, concern, patience, and the ability to help, namely reading.  David looked at God's attributes:
  • Faithful
  • Holy
  • Compassionate
  • Eternal
  • Almighty
  • Mighty in battle
  • Strong (like a tower, and refuge)
  • Ever present helper
  • Deliverer and provider

Second, David considered God's track record.  If is very hard to be encouraged by someone who has failed to come through.  But when David considered God, he saw a track record of proven success, proven love, proven faithfulness, and proven victory.  David considered the faithfulness of God to others:
  • Abraham whom he promised and delivered land, prosperity, victory over kings, a son in his old age, and a son of promise
  • Jacob who returned to his homeland, was delivered from Esau and Laban, and became a mighty nation
  • Moses whom he empowered to victory over Pharaoh and led a nation through the wilderness
  • Joshua who conquered Jericho, led victoriously into the promised land
  • Job whom God strengthened and blessed his former years more than his previous

Third, David considered the proximity of God.  In a battle an army gains courage when reinforcements are near.  A struggling team in NY was energized by the appearance of their ailing star coming down the tunnel.  David was no different.  He was encouraged by the proximity and nearness of God and his presence with him.  David knew that God was near, present and always and everywhere.  He also knew that God showed up when you needed him.

What could you do to be encouraged today with what you are going through?
  • Remember God's track record in ages past, and in your own past
  • Trust that He is hear.  The Lord is an ever present help (Psalm 46:1)
  • Rely on His power
  • Remember that God loves you so much that He came near, lived, died and rose for you

When time came for the little boy to recite the 23rd Psalm before his classmates, he rose from his chair and made his way up front.  With a bright smile he declared, "The Lord is my Shepherd, and that's all I need to know."  Encourage yourself with the knowledge that the Shepherd is always watching over His sheep, and you are his.

Good, but it has absolutely no power!

By grace you have been saved through faith,
and that not of yourselves:
it is the gift of God.
Ephesians 2:8

Good deeds abound, and good gifts are often given.  Random acts of kindness are great ways to brighten someones day, and can be observed all over the world.  As the authors of the 100 Most Important Bible Verses states:
Good works are evidence of faith, evidence of transformation, and evidence of a changed life.  Good works bring honor to God, blessings to others, and joy to the one who performs them.  But they have no power to open the doors to heaven.*
When you do good deeds you are blessing and bring glory to God.  You also bring blessings and joy to the receivers of your good deeds.

Your good deeds bring glory to God, and bring God joy as he sees your good works wrought through love.  I imagine God smiles when the selflessness of a Army private softens the heart of a cold commander who finally realizes that God loves him.  Or when the world finds hope because a believer reached out to the hurting with love.  Good deeds remind a fallen world of the power of God's love, His extravagant grace and His desire to help, comfort, bless, favor, restore, reconcile, grant peace, and bring joy to His children.

Not only do they bring joy to God, but they bring joy to others.  Just imagine the joy that a cup of milk and a cookie, along with a teddy bear will bring to someone.  We might think of them as insignificant until you discover that they were just given to a three year old who has just watched his home and all the bears he owned go up in smoke.  To that toddler the deeds of a group of moms, firefighters and First Response Units is life changing.  It is good winning against evil

Good deeds bring us joy as well as the giver.  We smile when we look at milk mustaches made on dark nights when normal has gone up in the bright flames of an unexpected home fire.

Good deeds cheer our soul and refresh our spirits.  When someone shows us love we feel a bit better, like the world is brighter for just that moment.  It grants hope and joy.

Simply put, good deeds have tremendous power.  They have the power to bring joy to the receiver, a smile to a child, comfort to a grieving widow, help to a struggling parent, hope to a person in despair, fellowship to the lonely, and so forth.

Good deeds, they do have power, but powerful as they are they have "no power to open the doors of heaven."  No matter how grand, impressive, elaborate, or special they have no power whatsoever "to open the doors of heaven."  They have power to glorify God, point to Him, and bless others, but they cannot, ever force Him to open the doors of heaven.

Our best deeds, our good deeds, even or most wonderful and amazing deeds are powerless to open heaven's doors.  Ten thousand can't!  Ten million won't!  Hit the trillions and beyond and they'd still be unable to do it.

Don't get me wrong.  Doing good is essential, and good deeds are great.  We are all called to do great and wonderful deeds for others, and in the name of Christ.  We must act justly, defend the orphan, look after the widow, help the abused, take care of the poor, and serve one another.  There is no escaping the commands to love one another, and no escaping the truth that love is an action verb..  But no matter how many good things you do, they can't open up heaven's doors.  Why?

The doors of heaven are only opened by the free gift of grace found in the life, death, resurrection and salvation that is given through Jesus Christ.  That's it.  By grace and grace alone.  Good deeds have no power at heaven's doors.

Welcome to Friday! - 8.29.14

Welcome to Friday!

I pray that the most merciful,  almighty, and loving
creator of the universe, The Eternal God
will open your heart and mind to see the beauty,
and wonder of the amazing day he has for you today,
and the blessings, mercy, and grace that He
fully extended to you in the week gone by.
With joy and wishes for your continued
blessing and favor.

Welcome to Friday!  Today is an amazing day waiting to unfold for you and for us.  How are you doing?  How is your day going?  How was your week and how did you do this week?  Did you balance rest, work, and your dreams?  Did you accomplish what you set out to do, or did you do even more than you originally imagined?  How are those you love and who love you doing this week?  I hope that everyone in your family, and all those whom you name as friends are doing exceptional.

I am off to a beautiful day.  Ava woke up early this morning and proclaimed that the sky was black, followed by "I want to walk."  It was an amazing morning to walk outside before the stifling heat, busyness, and noise of the suburbs interrupted the morning calm.  As we walked, my nature lover who loves to be outside, but shrieks at every gnat, pointed out the beautiful and bright stars, the blueness of the morning sky, and the crisp cool air.  We were up even before the sun began to peak through the clouds.  It was one of those unexpected blessings that turns your day in a great, new, and positive direction.

The stars dotted across the sky is a good metaphor for my week.  If I were to look at just one star, in isolation, all I would have noticed was a single light in the vast expanse of a blue sky.  If I looked at only one star I might notice it was bright, or dim, fading, and barely, just barely visible.  If I looked at just one star the picture of the morning sky would be lack luster, nothing to write about or be in awe of.  However, if I look closer beyond just one star, I'd notice sparkling jewels on the canvas of the Creator.  If I looked beyond any one star, this morning, I would easily see another, and another and suddenly a picture of a constellation unfolding.  Although I didn't see the whole constellation and I really would not have known which one it was if I had, I didn't need to know what it was, or see the whole thing to admire the shear wonder, beauty, and magnificence of dazzling whites glowing against the amazing tapestry of blues, grays, and blacks that adorned the morning sky as their backdrop.

That is how this week has been.  If I look at the things of this week such as meetings, gripping at work, missed conference calls, extra duties, homework and paperwork in isolation I would miss the bigger picture.  If I only stared at the week's expenses, busyness, doctor's appointments, aches and fevers, misunderstandings, fatigue, spills and accidents in isolation I would surely have missed any notion of blessing.  If I had focused on losing at basketball during lunch and Carolina forgetting to play defense last night I would have missed a number of amazing blessings placed on the canvas of this past week by the awesome hand of God.  Sure the week featured some challenges, but stepping back I count another great week filled with favor, and blessings.

My blessings include:
  • My team at work helping create the software to close a great business deal initially worth $25k, and helping resolve a customer issue that has taken nine months to diagnose and repair.
  • Fixing the lights in the foyer and on the Microware
    • As Trish can attest I am not the most handy of handymen
    • The first time I replaced the microwave light bulb, we had to replace the microwave too
  • Hearing Cassarra and Gabbi work together to plan for Cassarra's 17th birthday
    • Hearing Cassarra plan for a small group of friends at Hi-wire (indoor trampoline park)
    • Hearing Gabbi plan for a reasonable choice for food after the party
  • Sydney and Paige having a good week at school
    • Sydney did exceptionally well on her testing this week
    • Paige is adjusting to the 3rd grade and keeping up with homework
  • Spending time with Ava and Emma during lunch on Wednesday
    • Laughing with Emma and Ava as they played hide and seek
    • Watching Ava try to keep the much "bigger" Emma away from the iPad
    • Laughing as Emma kept trying to close Ava in the closet when I sent Ava to get me a diaper for Emma
  • A good appointment for Gabbi at the dermatologist
  • Trish's continued progress with her shoulder
  • Family dinner with my grandfather from Alabama as the special guest
  • Spending time with family at dinner last night; I made hotdogs and fries and baked Parmesan encrusted Tilapia
  • Hearing the girls on the choir on Sunday
    • Gabbi sing at church and having her nail the songs she was singing
    • Hearing Sydney sing her song and doing so with joy
  • Paige helping make breakfast
  • Walking with Ava in the cool of the morning
  • Talking with Trish and planning for a weekend of painting and then relaxing
  • Having fun with friends during lunch, even in defeat

The more I think about it, the light and temporary challenges of this week do not compare with the joys I have enjoyed.  What were your blessings?

I hope you have a great and wonderful weekend filled with love, joy and the unstoppable power that indwells you when you realize that you are amazing!  Have a great weekend and...

Welcome to Friday!

Ever present and Almighty God, turn our gaze away from lesser things
and towards your infinite and beautiful and perfect love.
Turn our focus from the turmoil (inside and without).
In the midst of chaos, grant us peace.
In the midst of despair, give us hope.
In all things and in all moments of this journey,
grant us the blessing of Your unconditional,
infinite and unstoppable love.
Turn our gaze to the beauty of Your holiness.
Amen.

With love (& in triumph),

Break it down...

Jesus said, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you."  - Matthew 28:19-20

Take this verse apart and break it down with all the words that stood out to me.

Thereforefor that reason; consequently.  Since some X is true, then for that reason some Y has occurred.  Or the consequence of X having taken place, now we can do Y.  Therefore mean as a result of, for that reason, because of, or consequently we can now do this.  Go therefore - go because of the resurrection, because He, Christ has "all power" given unto Him, in "heaven and in earth."  Since He appeared risen, since He appointed them, since they had worshiped Him, and since He has all power - for that reason they can go.

Make - to form something by putting parts together, combining substances, create, prepare or draw it up.  To cause something to exist or come about, bring about, or produce as a result of an effort. To make means to succeed in something.  Go therefore and make, put the parts of something together in such a way that what results is a disciple.  To make means to form, and also to prepare.  As they go the power, witness, strength, hope, and victory of the resurrection should be parts, along with something that helps cause to come into existence disciples.

Disciples - someone who believes and helps spread the beliefs of another; typically referred to in the context of the 12 that followed Jesus, or of those who are in relationship with Jesus.  A disciple is a student and learner of the life, death and resurrection of Christ; one who adheres to a way of life centered and grounded on the trust in God's will and his promises; relying on Christ to help us do the things that Christ did on earth and those that he commanded us to do until his return, and all for the glory of God.  Go because of the power and witness of the resurrection and form, prepare and bring about by your actions, followers of Christ.

All nations - all nations means everyone can receive the Gospel; that Christ came for and sends us out to all people (to  all races, genders, orientations, persuasions, cultures, backgrounds, and every ethnicity).  All means all!  To go and share the Gospel with all nations, and make disciples of all nations means just that.  All means all!  All means that their should be disciples who are white, black, yellow, fat, skinny, tall, short, male, female, slave, free, Jew, non-Jew, American, Russian, Arabic, Chinese, etc. and etc.  All nations means that God intends for their to be a diversity in your church.  Poor and rich, old and young, Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern continents included.

Name - a word or set of words by which a person is known or addressed, or referred to; title, tag or honor.  A word of phrase that constitutes the distinctive designation of a person or thing, a word used in logic to designate and entity; the reputation of a person or thing, an established reputation.

In the name of - by the authority of, for the reason of.  When we make disciples from all these different people of all these different nations we are to do it in the authority of the one who has the power of the divine title.  In the power and by reason of the honor and designation and because of the established reputation of the one who spoke the instruction.

Teaching - to show or explain something to someone, to show how to do something, give information or instruction, give lessons, or instill, encourage someone to learn, understand, or accept something as a fact or principle.  To make someone less inclined to do something.

Observe - to watch, notice, to conform one's practices to, comply with, to celebrate or solemnize in an acceptable way, to come to know or realize especially through noted facts, to watch and listen carefully.

All things means all and not just the easy and convenient.  All includes the hard parts and the not so fanciful pieces.  All includes laying down your own life and agenda, loving your enemies, losing your life and choosing God's will over your own.

I - the subject the one who talks and is speaking.

Commanded: and authoritative instruction to do something; to be in strong enough position to order, or secure something.

Jesus is commanding His followers to go because of his resurrection and power, into all nations, to form people who will believe, receive and then share the Gospel.  They are to do this by putting all of His teachings together in their proper place to create these disciples from all types of people and in all places.  The instruction, lessons, and facts stem from the authority of His holiness, and the power and distinctness of His reputation and being.  Encourage, explain, give lessons and encourage them to learn who Jesus is, what He has done, and then conform to what they learn.  In all things do what he commanded.

Finally, what has he commanded?  Namely this: to love God and love one's neighbor; to believe in the Father and His love; trust in His only Son, and to live out your life in love for Christ through your love for one another.  He commanded that we know and trust that God is God, that He is our way to life, and that He alone will grant our hearts, souls and bodies the divine salvation, oneness, wholeness and abundant life that is needed.
